My name is Edward Cating, and I am a landscape and portrait painter who has recently relocated from the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts to the Western Slope town of Ridgway, Colorado. I first encountered Ridgway as a 17 year old on a motorcycle, and have been longing to return ever since. The mountain beauty here truly is sublime, and I seek to see it, paint it, and make its immensity a little more personal.
My formal training took place at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. However, I have painted since I was six, and question whether painting can ever really be taught. It’s a bit like breathing. I paint from life, photos, and imagination. My work tends to be intimate, energetic, evocative, and expressive. I am drawn to contrasts. Look through the gallery and archive, and feel free to contact me.
